  Ontario Young Rider Program

Fundraising Challenge

In order for the Young Rider program to be successful, we need everyone’s help. The programs require substantial funding and the more money we raise, the greater the subsidies we can provide.

We expect that as members of the program you will participate in fundraising to offset these costs. At a minimum, each registered Young Rider should raise a minimum of $300 in sponsorship or support for the program. This year, we are excited to launch a fundraising challenge for the OHTA Young Rider program. Our top fundraisers will win fantastic prizes, so get out there and stay tuned for prize details. To support your fundraising, we are working with Organo Gold, a coffee company that has a fantastic program to raise money for programs like the OHTA Young Riders. Please contact Laura Richard at laurakrichard@gmail.com to learn more about how Organo Gold products can be used for fundraising or to chat about other ideas and support for your fundraising efforts.

  • To participate as a selected team member at a designated team challenge competition at the Pretraining and Training level
  • Opportunity to have competitions financially subsidized based on application, consistency throughout season and funding available.
     Qualifying and Selection

The Qualifying and Selection procedure is designed to help identify up-and-coming horse/rider combinations as well as to help riders qualify for funding to travel to and compete at the NAJYRC and other designated Three-Day Events. The Young Riders Selection Committee will nominate 4 JUNIOR Preliminary riders and a Team of 4-6 Intermediate YOUNG RIDERS to represent the province at the North American Young Riders Championships or the Championships of the Americas. Please read the qualification criteria carefully so you can plan your season accordingly. If there are ANY QUESTIONS, please do not hesitate to contact one of the Competitions/Selection sub committee members for clarification.

     EQUINE-HIPPIQUE CANADA - FEI REQUIREMENTS

The Equine-Hippique Canada requires all riders to declare their intent to compete at a three-day event. If you plan on qualifying for the NAJYRC, or any CCI or CIC you should send in your declaration of intent to Fleur Tipton, Director of Eventing. Please check the front of your omnibus for deadline dates. An FEI Passport IS required for CCI* and CCI**, FEI passport applications are available on the Equine-Hippique Canada website.

     NEWS/INFORMATION and WEBSITE

The Young Rider website will contain information about upcoming clinics and competitions. Young Rider news and information will be posted on the Young Rider website. We also have a Facebook Young Rider group established, if you are a member of Facebook, feel free to  visit the group and connect with other Young Riders.

ATTENTION YOUNG RIDERS AND YOUR COACHES!!

We encourage the regular coaches of the registered Ontario Young Riders to attend any of the clinics that their students take with the Ontario Young Rider program. Any insight that the coaches would like to provide to the team coaches is most definitely encouraged and welcomed. The coaches are not necessarily the selectors of the teams, but they are asked for input in the selection process. The regular coaches should also be an intricate part of the process leading up to the major competitions that their students are aspiring to, such items as;
  • Providing advice to which competitions they should attend to meet the qualifications
  • The training and conditioning program leading up to the major competition
  • Regular veterinary examinations to ensure their horse is meeting the expectations required and all inoculations are up to date.
  • Nutritional requirements for the performance horse
  • Ensuring correct dressage tests are known for the intended competition
  • Providing encouragement to the riders throughout the season
  • Plus there are many more opportunities to help them succeed

All of this can be provided, but with such a limited amount of time that the Young Riders coaches spend with the riders, it is better that this is provided by the regular coaches. The more that the regular coaches communicate with the team coaches in the program, the better they will be able to provide the best educational experience for the riders.
